| CIMMERIAN BOSPOROS. Pantikapaion. Circa 340-325 BC. Stater (Gold, 22.5 mm, 9.09 g, 11 h). Head of Pan to left, wearing a wreath of ivy. Rev. Π-Α-Ν Griffin standing on grain ear to left, his head facing front, holding a spear in his mouth and with his right forepaw raised. Anokhin 1021. HGC 7, 20. Kraay & Hirmer 440. MacDonald 54. SNG BM Black Sea 867. Attractively toned and perfectly centered, of impressively bold Graeco-Scythian style. Extremely fine.
Sold on behalf of the Compagnie Bancaire Helvétique, Switzerland, ex Triton XIV, 4 January 2011, 257, Leu 83, 6 May 2002, 135, Numismatica Ars Classica 8, 3 April 1995, 241 and from the collection of R. Burrage, Ars Classica XVII, 3 October 1934, 398, then bought by Herbert Cahn.
Pantikapaion was founded by Milesian colonists c. 575 BC on the western shore of the Cimmerian Bosporos. It prospered greatly from its involvement in the Euxine grain trade, where it served as a collection and dispersal center for Crimean grain as it made its way to markets in the Aegean. Because of this, the community grew very wealthy, enabling it to support both an extensive and highly varied silver coinage as well as beautiful gold issues, struck on the Bosporan standard of c. 9.1 g, of which this splendid coin is a wonderful example. The head of bearded Pan on the obverse, crowned with a wreath of ivy, is a punning allusion to the city's name, while the fearsome horned griffin on the reverse was the protector of its wealth.

Classical Numismatic Group, LLC Auction 121 6-8 Oct 2022 Lot 283
Start 45 000 USD Estimate 75 000 USD
DESCRIPTION CIMMERIAN BOSPOROS, Pantikapaion. Circa 340-325 BC. AV Stater (21mm, 9.07 g, 11h). Head of Pan left, wearing ivy wreath / Griffin, holding spear in its mouth, standing left, head facing, forepaw raised, on grain ear; Π-A-N around. Anokhin 1021; MacDonald 54; HGC 7, 20; SNG BM Black Sea 864; Gulbenkian 588–90; Jameson 1361; Pozzi 1150; Sartiges 1580; CNG 117, lot 165 (same obv. die); Triton VII, lot 151 (same obv. die). Lustrous. NGC photo certification 6556103-001, graded MS, Strike: 5/5, Surface: 4/5. Well centered and struck on a broad flan.
Pantikapaion was founded by Greek colonists from Miletos in the late seventh century BC. Situated on the west side of the Cimmerian Bosporos, in what is now called the Crimea, it achieved great prosperity through its exploitation of the abundant fisheries of the straits and the export of wheat from the Crimea. This wealth is attested by its splendid gold coinage, which commenced in the mid-4th century BC, and by the magnificently furnished rock tombs of its principal citizens in the same period. Later, it was to become a regional capital of the kingdom of Mithradates VI of Pontos (120-63 BC) and later still the seat of the kings of Bosporos (first century BC – fourth century AD). The coinage of Pantikapaion seems to have commenced with silver issues in the latter part of the fifth century BC, but it is for its beautiful gold staters that the mint is chiefly noted. They depict the head of the god Pan (a pun on the name of the city) and on the reverse, the griffin that Herodotos describes as being the guardian of the remote sources of gold.

| Статер Митридата III (VIII) (39-44 г.н.э.), 337 г.б.э.
KINGS OF BOSPOROS. Mithradates III, 39/40-44/5 . Stater (Gold, 21.5 mm, 7.90 g, 12 h), year ΖΛΤ = 337 = 40-41. Laureate Roman Imperial-like head to right. Rev. BACIΛEΩC MIΘPIΔATOY / Ζ-ΛΤ Nike flying left, holding wreath in right hand and palm in left. MacDonald 309. RPC I 1908A. Extremely rare and important - the RPC online only lists a single specimen = Triton XXV, 2022, 639. Struck from slightly imperfect dies, otherwise, nearly extremely fine. From a Swiss collection, acquired circa 2004.
Tiberius Julius Mithradates acceded to the throne of the Bosporan kingdom as King Mithradates III following the death of his mother Gepaepyris in 39. He was not only a Roman citizen, but through his grandparents he could claim descent from both Mark Antony and Mithradates VI of Pontus. As the obverse portrait on this spectacular stater/aureus indicates, Mithradates III did not really owe his authority to his lineage, or even to the natural laws of royal succession, but to the approval of the Roman Emperor. Exactly which emperor this was meant to be is uncertain, if an emperor was meant, since the head on this coin is a kind of generic Julio-Claudian one. While it has been identified as Claudius by some, it is the same as the head on Mithradates's issue of year 336 or 39/40, which, of course, was struck under Caligula! So perhaps it is best seen as a romanised portrait of Mithradtes III himself. Unfortunately for Mithradates III, he had a younger brother named Cotys who was also desirous of the Bosporan throne. After a five year reign, in 44/5 Cotys managed to convince Claudius that he would be a more suitable client king than his older brother. While Mithradates III then raised an army and marched against Cotys and his Roman allies, he was defeated and deposed after a three-day war. Thanks to his regal bearing, even in defeat, Claudius spared him the shame of appearing in a Roman triumphal procession and instead ordered him into exile.
This extremely rare coin was struck in happier times, when the king, who was known to call himself Philogermanicus ("Friend of Germanicus") in reference either to Claudius's popular older brother or to the Emperor himself, could still count on the friendship of Claudius and his family and when he had not yet been deserted by the Victory who was his coin type.

Nomos AG Auction 30 6 Nov 2023 Lot 1250 Estimate: 4 500 CHF Current bid: ---
CIMMERIAN BOSPOROS. Pantikapaion. Circa 370-355 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 14 mm, 2.62 g, 6 h). Head of a bearded satyr facing, turned very slightly to the left, with animal ears and wearing an ivy wreath. Rev. ΠΑΝΤΙ Lion attacking a stag to right. HGC 7, 65. MacDonald 42. Attractively toned and with a spectacular portrait of a satyr, who was a thoughtful companion of Dionysos, rather than just a wild creature of the forests. Minor marks on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
The astounding quality of this rare coin implies that it was minted for a special occasion, or perhaps just as a donative to be used by whoever financed the issue.
