ITALY, Papal Bullae. Sixtus V (Felice Peretti). 1585-1590. PB Bulla (37mm, 47.23 g, 12h). · + ·/SIXTVS/· PAPA ·/· V · in four lines; all within linear-beaded border / Bare heads of Sts. Paul and Peter, facing slightly right and left, respectively, each within halo; S/P/A and S/P/E above, long cross between; all within linear-beaded border. Serafini II 847-9. Near VF, minor roughness.

From the Luparello Collection.

Born to a rather poor family, Sixtus V was a reformer not only religiously, but also politically. He was open to large ideas and approached the papacy with zeal, reconstructing the administration of the papal state while also founding numerous municipal projects in Rome. Inheriting a bankrupt treasury, he administered his funds carefully and left the Vatican with a substantial surplus upon his death.

ITALY, Papal Bullae. Leo X (Giovanni de’Medici). 1513-1521. PB Bulla (35mm, 55.20 g, 12h). ·/LEO/PAPA/· ·X· ·/· in five lines; all within beaded-linear border / Bare heads of Sts. Paul and Peter, facing slightly right and left, respectively, each within beaded halo; S/P/A and S/P/E above, long cross between, six-beaded circle below; all within beaded-linear border. Serafini I 220. EF, remains of yellow chord. Well struck.

From the Luparello Collection.

Leo X was the son of Lorenzo de Medici, “il Magnifico,” who succeeded the warrior-pope Julius II. A serious patron of the arts, like his father, and intimate friends with many of the titans of the Italian High
Renaissance, he oversaw the completion of many of the artistic projects begun by his predecessor. Among these was the new St. Peter’s Basilica. Designed by the great architect Donato Bramante and begun in 1506 to replace the earlier dilapidated Constantinian version, its construction encompassed the better part of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries to complete. To provide much-needed funds for the basilica’s construction, Leo in 1517 offered indulgences, papal rescripts which, when purchased, allowed partial absolution for the recipient. It was the aggressive marketing and perceived “selling” of these indulgences by the Dominican friar Johann Tzetzel in his native Germany, which in part, precipitated the actions of Martin Luther and sparked the Protestant Reformation.

ITALY, Papal Bullae. Julius II (Giuliano Della Rovere). 1503-1513. PB Bulla (36mm, 43.82 g, 12h). ·IV/LIVS ·/PAPA/· II · in four lines; all within beaded-linear border; (acorn stops) / Bare heads of Sts. Paul and Peter, facing slightly right and left, respectively, each within beaded halo; S/P/A and S/P/E above, long cross between, group of three acorns below; all within beaded-linear border. Serafini I 211-4 var. (obv. legend). EF, yellow chord still intact. Well struck; rare.

From the Luparello Collection.

The altar boy and nephew of Pope Sixtus IV, Julius II dealt with foreign affairs very forcefully, regaining Perugia and Bologna from their despots, even leading troops himself. In mourning for the loss of Bologna, he wore a beard for nine months, a practice which Clement VII copied and made vogue. Julius II was also a patron of the arts, financing artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bramante.

From the Luparello Collection.

Clement XI, born to a noble family in Urbino, became a patron of education and the arts, founding a public library and augmenting the collection in the Vatican. He faced great conflict, however, in the form of the War of Spanish Succession soon after his accession and was eventually forced to support the claims of each side.

ITALY, Papal Bullae. Gregory XV (Alessandro Ludovisi). 1621-1623. PB Bulla (36mm, 47.12 g, 12h). GRE/GORIVS/· PAPA ·/· XV · in four lines; all within linear-beaded border / Bare heads of Sts. Serafini II 138 (same dies as bulla illustrated). Good VF, minor roughness, yellow chord still intact.

From the Luparello Collection.

The first Jesuit-trained Pope, Gregory XV brought with him a great deal of experience in diplomacy. One of his most important acts as Pope was the bull aeterni patris, which regulated the modes of papal election. He also issued the last papal ordinance against witchcraft in Omnipotentis Dei. Widely respected by many of the European rulers, he strove to promote peace and unity among the Catholic world.

ITALY, Papal Bullae. Eugenius IV (Gabriele Condulmer). 1431-1447. PB Bulla (41mm, 50.22 g, 12h). +/· EVGEN/IVS · P P/· IIII · in four lines; all within beaded-linear border; (Ω above P P) / S PA S PE, bare heads of Sts. Paul and Peter, facing slightly right and left, respectively, each within beaded halo; cruciform scepter between; all within beaded-linear border. Serafini I 55 (same dies as bulla illustrated). Good VF, a few deposits.

From the Luparello Collection.

Born to a wealthy Venetian family, Eugene IV took strong action against the numerous entitlements granted to the family of his predecessor, Martin V, an act which caused a great deal of controversy, along with the Council of Basel. Improvement only began when he was forced to flee for Florence, whereupon he established a union of the Eastern and Western churches with Byzantine Emperor John VIII Palaeologos.
