Roman Imperial
Theodosius II Æ Maiorina. Cherson (or Constantinople), AD 402-450. D N TAEODO [SIVS]P F AVG (sic), helmeted, diademed and bearded bust right, holding shield on left arm and spear facing forwards / CONCORDIA AG (sic), Theodosius and Valentinian, nimbate, standing facing holding long cross between them; CONS in exergue. RIC 460; Vagi 3750; LRBC 2231. 5.03g, 22mm, 6h.
Near Mint State; among the finest known examples. Extremely Rare; only four other examples in CoinArchives, all in very poor condition.
From the Cherson Collection of I.K.
This exceptional type has been suggested as having been struck for the occasion of the marriage of Valentinian III to the daughter of Theodosius, Licinia Eudoxia. The issue is, on account of the mintmark, occasionally described as having been struck at Constantinople for use at Cherson. However, the crude fabric and unconventional style as well as major inconsistencies in the epigraphy point to local production at the important port city of Cherson.
