CIMMERIAN BOSPOROS, Pantikapaion. Circa 340-325 BC. AV Stater (21.5mm, 9.14 g, 11h). Head of Pan left, wearing ivy wreath / Griffin, holding spear in its mouth, standing left, head facing, forepaw raised, on grain ear; Π-A-N around. MacDonald 54; Anokhin 1021; HGC 7, 20; SNG BM Black Sea 864; Gulbenkian 587 = Locker-Lampson 123; cf. Kraay & Hirmer 440. Good VF, underlying luster, scrape on obverse. Well centered.
Ex Numismatica Ars Classica 88 (8 October 2015), lot 394; Noble 100 (24 July 2012), lot 3360.

Pantikapaion was founded by Greek colonists from Miletos in the late seventh century BC. Situated on the west side of the Cimmerian Bosporos, in what is now called the Crimea, it achieved great prosperity through its exploitation of the abundant fisheries of the straits and the export of wheat from the Crimea. This wealth is attested by its splendid gold coinage, which commenced in the mid-4th century BC, and by the magnificently furnished rock tombs of its principal citizens in the same period. Later, it was to become a regional capital of the kingdom of Mithradates VI of Pontos (120-63 BC) and later still the seat of the kings of Bosporos (first century BC – fourth century AD). The coinage of Pantikapaion seems to have commenced with silver issues in the latter part of the fifth century BC, but it is for its beautiful gold staters that the mint is chiefly noted. They depict the head of the god Pan (a pun on the name of the city) and on the reverse the griffin that Herodotos describes as being the guardian of the remote sources of gold.

KINGS of BOSPOROS. Pharnakes II. Circa 63-46 BC. AV Stater (19.5mm, 8.19 g, 1h). Pantikapaion mint. Dated Bosporan Era 245 (53/2 BC). Diademed head right / BAΣIΛEΩΣ BAΣIΛ-EΩN MEΓAΛOY ΦAPNAKOY, Apollo seated left on lion-footed throne, holding branch in extended right hand, left arm resting on kithara; tripod to left; to right, EMΣ (date) above monogram. Frolova & Ireland § 5, dies B/e, 4 = G&K 5; Anokhin 1304 (same dies as illustration); MacDonald 184/2 (same dies as illustration); HGC 7, 198; DCA 446; Adams III 2044 (same dies). EF, slightly weak strike, some die wear. Very rare.
Pharnakes was awarded the Bosporan Kingdom by Pompey, for the betrayal of his father Mithradates VI, King of Pontos. Little is known of his 16-year reign except for its ending. During the Civil War between Pompey and Julius Caesar, Pharnakes tried to recapture his father's former territories in Pontos. He won a victory over Caesar's general, Domitius Calvinus, and ordered Romans in the region castrated or put to the sword. In response, Caesar launched a rapid five day war against Pharnakes in 47 BC, culminating in the battle of Zela. Caesar emerged victorious, prompting him to report back to the Senate with the now famous dictum, "Veni, Vidi, Vici" (I came, I saw, I conquered).

KINGS of BOSPORUS. Cotys II, with Hadrian. AD 123/4-132/3. AV Stater (19mm, 7.78 g, 12h). Dated BE 422 (AD 125/6). BACIΛЄωC KOTVOC, diademed and draped bust of Cotys right / Laureate head of Hadrian right, with small globe at point of bust; BKV (date) below. Frolova A/– (unlisted rev. die); MacDonald 424; Anokhin 473; RPC III 880.4 (this coin). Good VF, minor earthen encrustation.

Ex Classical Numismatic Group 66 (19 May 2004), lot 1028.

The Bosporan Kingdom, occupying the northern coastline of the Black Sea and coastal areas around the Sea of Azov, was the longest-lived of all Hellenistic Kingdoms, lasting nearly 800 years from the fifth century BC to the later fourth century AD. With an economy based on trade in precious metals, grain, fish and slaves, the kingdom had a native population mixing a multitude of ethnicities under a veneer of Greek languague and culture. From the later first century BC, the Bosporan Kingdom could be described as a Roman "client state," but the relationship was less subordinate than symbiotic, with the Bosporan kings requiring Roman assent to rule, and Rome relying heavily on the kings to protect the vulnerable northern frontier from hostile incursions by the Scythians and Sarmatians. Starting with the reign of Polemo I (15/14 BC-AD 9/10), the Bosporan gold coinage typically depicted the Roman Emperor and his relations and/or co-rulers.
